A chartered accountant by training, Joe has over 17 years experience in the property development and financing arena, he serves on the board of directors of the US Green Building Council and is also a founder and director of the Canada Green Building Council...

Joe  was the development consultant for the Vancouver Island Technology Park (VITP), a high-tech park in Victoria, British Columbia. It was awarded the gold level certification by the United States Green Building Council under their Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) program, making it the first LEED® certified building in Canada. The project was also awarded the 2002 BOMA BC Earth Award and the UDI Sustainable Development Award.

Joe is a co-developer of Victoria's Dockside Green project. Co-developed with Vancity Enterprises, Dockside Green will be a socially vibrant, ecologically restorative, economically sound and just community, set on Victoria's working harbour. It will be a distinct collection of beautifully designed live, work, play and rest spaces designed to enhance the health and well being of both people and ecosystems, both now and in the future

Joe is committed to the ongoing development, education and promotion of environmentally, socially and financially responsible green building developments and will be sharing his experience in green building development from a developer's perspective.

Bill Reed

Bill Reed, AIA, LEED, Hon FIGP, principal Integrative Design Collaborative, US

An internationally recognized proponent and practitioner in sustainability and regeneration Bill is a principal in three firms, the Integrative Design Collaborative, Regenesis, Inc., and Delving Deeper – green building consulting, living system design, and education organizations working to lift building and community planning into full integration and co-evolution with living systems...

 

His work centers on creating the framework for and managing an integrative, whole-systems design process. The objective: to improve the overall quality of the physical, social and spiritual life of our living places and therefore the planet.

Bill is a planning consultant, design process facilitator, lecturer, and author. He has participated in over 300 presentations and workshops relating to Sustainable, Regenerative and Whole System Design. He has consulted on over two hundred green design commissions and dozens of LEED projects - achieving many certifications – the majority Gold and Platinum. He is a guest lecturer at Universities from Harvard and MIT to the University of British Columbia. His clients range from New York City Department of Design and Construction, U.S. General Services Administration, Loreto Bay, Baja, Mexico, Sidwell Friends School, US Green Building Council, Genzyme Corporation, Teknion, LLC, the Willow School, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, various city planning agencies on the East and West coast, and many private development companies in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Teena G. Shouse
Teena G. Shouse, CFM, IFMA Fellow & Senior FM Consultant at FEA Associates, Kansas, US

Teena has 25 years of experience in service related fields, predominately in Facility Management.  Her primary expertise includes Project Management, Business Process Improvement, sustainability in FM, staff development, outsourced contract governance, capital planning and budgeting, and Operations & Maintenance...

 

 

Before joining FEA, she held the position of VP Strategic Partnerships with ARAMARK overseeing collaborative strategies.  Prior to ARAMARK, Teena was the GM of Employee Services at Sprint for 18 years. She was part of the design and construction team which researched, planned and built the 4.2 million sq. ft. campus in Overland Park, Kansas. As GM, she was involved in all aspects of campus operations from day to day operations to sustainability strategies. 

Currently, among her projects include consulting on the FM operational plan for the Kaufman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, affecting the operational plan for everything from FM technology to energy management.  She creates and teaches Facility Management and Sustainability courses for IFMA and FEA and is a guest speaker at numerous North America and International conferences and universities.  From 2005-2007, she served as the Chairman of the IFMA Board of Directors.  She was recently appointed to serve as the Deputy Chair of the Global FM Board of Directors, a global federation of FM organizations based in Brussels, Belgium.  

Shane Esmore
Shane Esmore, Director, Principal Sustainability Consultant, Umow Lai Pty Ltd, Melbourne Australia.

Shane is a Director of Umow Lai and Umow Lai's Principal Sustainability Consultant. Umow Lai is a building services and sustainability consultancy and is one of the largest and most active sustainable building consultants in Australia.

Shane has extensive experience in the design of a large number of sustainable buildings across a wide range of project types. Shane's expertise in green building design has been widely recognised for its technical innovation and high performance. Shane has travelled widely, investigating the cutting edge of green building design and technology from around the world.

This experience combined with their ongoing research has enabled Umow Lai to apply innovative sustainable design solutions to numerous leading green building projects in Australia and the Asia Pacific Region, some of which Shane will be sharing with us by way of case studies.

Pooran Desai
Pooran Desai OBE, co-founder BioRegional Development Group; Technical Director, One Planet Communities, UK

Pooran studied at Oxford and Cambridge Universities before co-founding BioRegional Development Group with Sue Riddlestone. Initially he worked on sustainable woodland management and charcoal production, working to launch BioRegional Charcoal Company Ltd (BRCC) of which he remains Managing Director. He led on BioRegional's Lavender Project and in 1998, he drew together the partnership to construct BedZED.

 

During his time at BioRegional, Pooran has been a sustainability consultant to central government, local authorities and developers, in the UK and overseas and lectures widely. For three years he chaired the Homes and Environment group of the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Advisory Committee on Consumer Products and the Environment (ACCPE).

In 2005, Pooran helped found property development company BioRegional Quintain Ltd (BQL). He stepped down as co-director of BioRegional Development Group to take up the role of Sustainability Director at BQL. Pooran now divides his time between BQL, working for BioRegional Development Group as a director of the "One Planet Living" initiative, and continuing as MD of BRCC.

In 2004, Pooran was honoured with an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) by the Queen for services to sustainable development.


Mark Swilling
Professor Mark Swilling, Programme Coordinator: Sustainable Development Planning and Management in the School of Public Management and Planning, University of Stellenbosch and Academic Director of the Sustainability Institute, SA

Prior to this Professor Swilling was the co-founder and Director of the Graduate School of Public and Development Management at the University of the Witwatersrand, 1995-1998; and co-founder of PLANACT in 1985, an urban development NGO.

 

Professor Swilling obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Warwick in 1994 and has a BA and a BA (Honours) obtained through the Department of Political Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand where he was also a lecturer from 1982 - 1987.

He has published over 50 academic articles, five books and written extensively for the popular media on a wide range of public policy issues. In 2007 he was invited to be a member of the International Panel on Sustainable Resource Management, established by the United Nations.

Digby Hall
Digby Hall - Director, Synergy Green Pty Ltd, Sustainability Consultants, Adelaide Australia.

Synergy Green was established to service the Australian property industry's growing need for specialist sustainability consultancy services and in particular Green Star expertise. Previously a director of one of Australia’s largest architectural practices, Digby now provides specialist sustainability and Green Star support to all stakeholders in the delivery of green property, ranging from building owners, lawyers and real estate firms to architects, engineers, product manufacturers and builders.

Digby has delivered Green Star training to over 2000 industry professionals in Australia via more than 60 courses on behalf of the GBCA. Digby is also a Certified Assessor for Green Star, having assessed many now-certified Green Star projects for Office, Office Interiors, Education and Multi-Unit Residential.  His consultancy is currently facilitating a number of Green Star submissions ranging from Office and Interiors to Education and Healthcare, and is also providing advice to various companies and government departments regarding procurement, product manufacturing and project documentation for Green Star.

Digby is currently working with the GBCA on a range of initiatives, including involvement in the Office Interiors Expert Reference Panel, development of new training courses and input into the Continuing Professional Development program.


Richard Palmer
Richard Palmer, WSP Group, SA

After a childhood spent in rivers, riffles and dams; on mountains, mudflats and grasslands, Richard curiously decided to study Mechanical Engineering.

After 4 years at the University of Cape Town, and an interesting period with the South African Breweries Ltd he joined Advanced Environmental in Sydney (now Built Ecology), the specialist sustainable design team of the engineering firm WSP Lincolne Scott. He has worked in Sustainable Consulting/Engineering in the built environment since 2005.

During his time in Australia, Richard was involved with a range of projects including the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Macquarie Bank Building in Sydney, Australian War Memorial and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Pacific Head Quarters in Hawaii. He has subsequently returned to the WSP business in Africa focusing on the development of green engineering within the business and the progress of sustainable urban design and engineering within the South African property industry; sitting on the TWG of the Green Star Retail Tool.

The areas of engineering which are of primary interest to Richard are:

  • Engineering systems thinking and integrated design
  • The role of engineering and infrastructure in societal upliftment
  • Technical delivery of complex systems and achieving complexity in design
  • Facilitation of shifting engineering perceptions towards more sustainable solutions

Jane Henley
Jane Henley, Chief Executive Officer , World Green Building Council, NZ

Jane Henley is the Chief Executive Officer of the World Green Building Council (WGBC). Green Building Councils operate in over 70 countries to facilitate the global transformation of the building industry towards sustainability. WorldGBC is a coalition of these country councils, making it the largest international organization influencing the green building marketplace.

Jane was on the founding board then the founding CEO of the New Zealand Green Building Council in 2006. Jane has been a director of the World Green Building Council, since 2007 until becoming the CEO in 2010. Jane is a director of the United Nations Sustainable Building Climate Initiative board, an active speaker and passionate about business leading change.

Jane is committed to driving market transformation that is underpinned by sound economic practices that simultaneously deliver financial, social and environmental benefits.

Lisa Michelle Galley
Lisa Michelle Galley - Managing Principal, Galley Eco Capital, US

A recognized leader in sustainability, Lisa Michelle Galley is the Founder of Galley Eco Capital, LLC, a green real estate finance consultancy that helps real estate investors and developers owners grow the cash flows of their green building investments.

Lisa's unique knowledge of the opportunities in green real estate has made her a sought after consultant, educator and speaker on green finance and urban sustainability. She has been an invited speaker at the Urban Land Institute and the Triple Bottom Line Investing Conference. She is the Treasurer of the Board of Directors for the Northern California Chapter of the US Green Building Council and a member of the national US Green Building Council’s Finance and Audit Committee...

A native of San Francisco, California, Lisa recently co-authored Metrics: Developing and Maintaining a High Performance Portfolio. Her blog, Our Green Journey, is syndicated to the real estate community online. She is currently co-authoring a forthcoming book on green building finance.
 
Prior to founding Galley Eco Capital, Lisa was a senior commercial real estate lender, active in several European countries and North America where she opened and ran real lending operations. Prior to that, she worked in roles where she negotiated workouts on underperforming loans and in asset management positions.

Jeff Robinson
Jeff Robinson - Principal Engineer and Sustainable Buildings Group Leader, Aurecon, Melbourne Australia

Jeff is Aurecon's Principal Engineer and Sustainable Buildings Group Leader. Jeff has worked as a consulting engineer for over 23 years working in London, Ireland and for the last 12 years in Melbourne. He has been involved in the design of a wide variety of building types including offices, residential, industrial, academic and institutional buildings.

Jeff is a passionate advocate for the design and renovation of Environmentally Sustainable Buildings and has been involved in many of the cutting edge ESD buildings in Melbourne and overseas. Jeff advises clients on the sustainable redevelopment of their Commercial and Educational buildings. He is an Accredited Greenstar Professional and NABERS assessor and has considerable expertise in the sustainable refurbishment of existing buildings and has experience with practical measures that can be undertaken to substantially improve the energy, water, waste and indoor air quality performance of existing buildings.

Jeff will speak on lessons learnt on the operational performance of some of the Green Star buildings Aurecon has designed, including 4O Albert rd, Bendigo Bank HQ, MFB training headquarters, VAGO fit out and TAC head quarters. The presentation will include the sustainability features of the buildings, highlighting which features worked and which did not as well as how easy (or not) the users found the building to operate and work in. A highly experienced and respected ESD consultant, Jeff's insights will be very beneficial to all working on green buildings.

Justin Bowen - Director, Equity Estates, SA

Justin Bowen is a director of Equity Estates. After completing a BSc (Building Science) at Wits University and becoming a director of Gothic Construction in Johannesburg, he moved into property development to assist primarily in the construction and development of Menlyn Maine






Jason Buch - PJ Carew Consulting, SA

Jason focuses on sustainable design management, driving the green aspects through projects' viability requirements and coordinating PJC's multi aspect design input with the rest of the consulting team on projects throughout southern Africa.

As the former Green Building Council of South Africa Technical Manager, Jason oversaw the Green Star SA rating system, including development and implementation of the rating tools and management of related technical training and the Green Star SA Accredited Professional program. Prior to joining the Council, Jason worked in the green building industry in the United States for 9 years, with previous construction and construction management experience. Most recently, Jason served as a senior green building consultant for one of the largest such consulting firms in the US. Originally trained as a civil engineer, Jason holds a B.S. from Cornell University in New York.

Michelle Malanca - Michelle Malanca Sustainability Consulting, US

Michelle Malanca has over twelve years of experience in the field of environmentally sustainable development, from strategy and planning though to implementation and construction. The former Technical Director at the Green Building Council of Australia, she was responsible for the development of green building rating tools across several building sectors, including retail, healthcare, education and multi-unit residential.

Michelle has made numerous presentations on green building topics, including at conferences in the US, Mexico, Australia and South Africa.

In South Africa, Michelle has been consulting to the Green Building Council of South Africa and managing the development of their first green building rating tool, Green Star SA-Office. This is the first in a series of rating tools that the GBCSA will be rolling out, including tools for public buildings, multi-unit residential developments and shopping centers.

Michelle also provides consulting services to developers to deliver effective green building programs and projects by identifying goals, establishing performance metrics and implementing strategies to achieve positive environmental outcomes.

Michelle holds a degree in Environmental Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Andy Horn
Andy Horn - Eco Design Architects, SA

After qualifying as an Architect at the University of Cape Town, Horn worked in various practices while voluntarily gaining hands on experience on the construction sites of a number of earth building projects. In 1997 he worked with Craterre-EAG the International centre for Earth Construction on a Centre for the Alliance Francaise and attended a course they offered on earth construction techniques. In 1998 he wrote and presented at South Africa's first Sustainability in the Built Environment Conference, a Manifesto for Green Architecture-6 broad principles for a greener architecture, whilst establishing ECO DESIGN-Architects & Consultants.



The practice has become an Award winning practice specializing in green building design, natural building construction and specialist training & facilitation workshops. Gaining experience in hands on workshop facilitation, integrated systems thinking & ecological design, Horn is widely recognised for his pioneering work in the field of green building in the South African Context.

. In 2004 he won a Sustainable Building Best Practice Award for Africa and in 2005 was awarded the Silver medal in the Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction in the Africa and the Middle East region. In 2007 he was short-listed for a Daimer Chryler Award for excellence in Architecture.

He has attracted a wide range of clients including governmental, institutional and NGO based clients, the resort and leisure market as well as residential & owner builder clientele. He also lectures and writes and has been widely published and exhibited both locally and internationally. Among other projects he is currently busy with a heritage revitalization project in the historic town of Mamre for the City of Cape Town.


Bruce Kerswill - Executive Chairman, GBCSA

Bruce is a Town and Regional Planner (Wits) and MBA (UCT's GSB) by training. He spent several years in the town planning profession, moved into housing and property development, and then into property asset management and corporate strategy. Later, he co-founded Spire Property Services and assembled Paramount Property Fund where he was an Executive Director, listing it on the JSE in 2001. He is currently Managing Director of Spire Property Group, which provides property management services to private clients.



From his involvement in some significant development projects, Bruce recognised that the lack of knowledge about green building in SA was limiting our efforts in terms of global warming and international best practice and, after meetings with the Green Building Council of Australia, agreed to champion an initiative to set up the Green Building Council of SA. Bruce is currently Executive Chairman of the GBCSA, and a director of the World GBC, and sits on the World GBC Executive Committee.

Alastair Armstrong - Director, InSynch Sustainable Technologies (Pty) Ltd, SA

Alastair Armstrong is a qualified Electrical Engineer with more than 20 years experience in the engineering, solar and project management industries. Alastair heads InSynch Sustainable Technologies who specialise in Green Building and Renewable Energy Consulting. Alastair also heads EarthWorx Construction who focus on natural construction implementation such as rammed earth and straw bale. Alastair has lectured and trained many built industry professionals in sustainable construction methods. Green Technology implementation is key to Alastair's strength as a green building consultant.



Frank Berkeley - Managing Executive, Nedbank Corporate Property Finance

Frank Berkeley, B Comm B Acc CA (SA), was Chief Executive Officer of Group Five Residential Division encompassing Group Five Homes, Goldstein Homes and Gough Cooper Homes. He then joined Syfrets in August 1994 as Regional General Manager for the Property Finance Division. In 1997 Syfrets merged with UAL and Nedbank Investment Bank to form Nedcor Investment Bank Limited where Frank held the position of Divisional Director of the Property Division. With the merger of Nedbank/NIB/CoGHB/BOE during October 2002, Frank became the Divisional Director of Nedbank's Corporate Property Finance Division and, in June 2004, he became the Managing Executive of Property Finance, Nedbank Corporate. He is also a director of Attfund Ltd, Acucap and Sycom Property Fund Managers Limited, who are the managers of Sycom Property Fund.



Manfred Braune - Technical Executive, GBCSA

Manfred has worked in the property industry (design and construction) for approximately 13 years, most of this being with the WSP Group as a consulting engineer and in more recent years as a sustainable buildings consultant. During his electrical engineering studies at the University of Cape Town in 1998 he focused his thesis on Green Buildings, and has had a passion and desire to work in this field since his primary school days at the German School in Pretoria.



He qualified as a registered professional engineer in 2002. His experience included a year and a half as a contracts manager on construction sites for a well known contractor in Cape Town. Until August 2010 Manfred has acted as technical director for WSP Green by Design, which is one of South Africa's leading sustainable design consulting businesses. In September 2010 Manfred took on the position of technical executive at the GBCSA. Manfred is a Green Star SA Accredited Professional and a Green Star Australia Accredited Professional. Manfred has been involved in various building design and construction projects in a technical and managerial role, including the first Green Star rated project in South Africa (Nedbank Phase II Green Star SA Office v1 Design Rating), and four further Green Star submissions in South Africa to the GBCSA.

Dr. Debra Roberts - Head, Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department, eThekwini Municipality

Dr. Debra Roberts heads the Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department of eThekwini Municipality (Durban, South Africa). Her key responsibilities in this post include:

  • overseeing the planning and protection of the city's natural resource base and biodiversity
  • directing and developing the Municipality's Climate Protection Programme




Dr Roberts is a lead author of Chapter 8, Urban Areas, of the Working Group II contribution to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report, due for release in 2014. She is also a member of various international advisory bodies focused on climate change issues in cities (e.g. the Rockefeller Foundation's Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changes' Expert Panel on Human Settlements and Infrastructure). In addition she is vice-chair of UN-Habitat's HS-NET Advisory Board which is currently working on the 2011 "Cities and Climate Change" Global Report.
